A five minutes’ walk from Liverpool Street Station is Old Spitalfields market, a covered market that’s been around since 1638 when Charles I of England was in power. Today the market is considered a popular fashion, arts, food and general market that is open 7 days a week. Two thirds of the historic market has been rebuilt to include restaurants, shops and a fairly large arts market called the Traders Market.
What you will find
Even if you’re not in the mood to shop, Old Spitalfields Market is still worth a visit because of the historical value that the place holds. The south area, called The Gun, recalls Tudor times, where the Honourable Artillery Company used to practice cross-bow, and later guns and artillery pieces. The east end is Christ Church, Spitalfields, where a large church stands built and named after the 18th Century English architect, Nicholas Hawksmoor.
