Overview & visitor information

The Noble Prophet’s Mosque was built by the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, when he arrived in Madinah, with the Companions, may God be pleased with them, participating in its construction. Caliphs throughout history expanded and maintained it. Its area grew over time until it received the care of the Saudi state under the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, becoming one of the largest mosques in the world, with the mosque and its courtyards accommodating more than a million worshippers. Besides its sanctity, the Prophet’s Mosque is a centre for scholars and students, with circles of remembrance studying the Holy Quran and its sciences, exegesis and hadith.
Famous mosques include Quba Mosque, the Mosque of the Two Qiblas, Friday Mosque, Al Fath Mosque, Al Ghamamah Mosque, Al Ijabah Mosque, Abu Bakr Mosque, Omar bin Al Khattab Mosque, Ali bin Abi Talib Mosque, the Miqat Mosque and many other historic mosques too numerous to list. The Madinah region also contains sites of famous battles in Islam, including Badr, Uhud, the Trench and Khaybar.

The cemetery of the martyrs of Uhud is beside Mount Uhud within Madinah’s sacred precinct. Among them is the Prophet’s uncle, our master Hamzah, may God be pleased with him, who was martyred with some Companions in the Battle of Uhud between Muslims and unbelievers on the mountain’s slopes. Visitors come here to reflect and learn lessons.
The site of the martyrs of Badr is where the thirteen martyrs of the Battle of Badr, may God be pleased with them, were buried. Their names are recorded on a commemorative panel beside the cemetery now surrounding the site in the town of Badr.
Al Arish Mosque is in Badr near the martyrs of Badr, on the site where a shelter was set up for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, during the Battle of Badr. A large modern congregational mosque has been built there, becoming one of Badr’s landmarks.
Ali bin Abi Talib Mosque is in Khaybar near Marhaba Palace and is a well-known mosque. A spring nearby, called Ain Ali, still flows today.
