Overview & visitor information

This area is famous for its food. Residents and foreigners gather for rich laksa—rice noodles immersed in a spiced coconut meat-stock soup—as well as chilli crab and other delicious seafood.

Give yourself the chance to experience the Peranakan way of life through its food, culture, clothing and old utensils in shops such as Rumah Bebe, Kim Choo Kueh Chang and Katong, as well as historic houses. The colourful shops take you back to the old days of the Chinese settlers who arrived here in the seventeenth century. Echoes of their Peranakan heritage continue to resonate here today.
