Why it is worth attending
On July 4th the Charles River Esplanade hosts what many call America's signature Independence Day event: the Boston Pops orchestra performing free at the Hatch Shell - the 1812 Overture with real cannon remains tradition - crowned by a fireworks barrage over the river watched by hundreds of thousands along both banks. Entry is free with security screening at Esplanade checkpoints; devoted attendees claim Oval positions from morning, but families can arrive late afternoon for comfortable Cambridge-side or Memorial Drive views of the fireworks themselves (from roughly 10:30 pm; verify timings at july4th.org). Practical counsel: public transport only (the T runs late; roads close), pack picnic and water, and expect a slow crowd-managed exit.
