Why visit

Georges Island is the family flagship: Civil War-era Fort Warren's tunnels, ramparts, and parade grounds beg for exploration, rangers tell the resident ghost story on request, and picnic lawns face the skyline across the water. Spectacle Island adds a swimming beach, marina cafe, and drumlin-top panorama - the harbor's best - five miles of trails included. Facilities are deliberately rustic: pack food and water (halal planning made simple - bring your own), sunscreen, and layers for the crossing breeze. The ride itself, past planes descending into Logan and the harbor light, satisfies children before landfall. Budget a half to full day.
