Why visit
The granite obelisk crowning Charlestown marks the Battle of Bunker Hill (June 1775), where untrained colonists inflicted staggering casualties on the British Army and proved the Revolution would be a war - 'don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes' entered legend here. The monument experience is physical: 294 spiral granite steps, no elevator, rewarded by wraparound views over the harbor, downtown towers, and the Navy Yard below. Climbing is free; access hours and any timed-entry rules should be verified with the National Park Service, and the stairwell closes in extreme heat. The small museum opposite provides context and, crucially, restrooms. It is the Freedom Trail's final stop and feels like one - an earned summit. Skip the climb with unwilling knees or children under about six; the base and lawns satisfy on their own.
