Why visit
Boston breathes along the Charles: the Esplanade's riverside parkland runs roughly three miles on the Boston bank, laced with lagoons, footbridges, playgrounds, and paths where the city jogs, cycles, and pushes strollers. Community sailing fills the basin with white sails all summer - lessons and rentals operate seasonally (verify) - and the Hatch Shell amphitheater hosts free concerts, most famously the July 4th Boston Pops. For visiting families it is the free pressure-release valve between paid attractions: the Stoneman Playground ranks among the city's best, ice cream stands appear in season, and the Longfellow Bridge crossing to Cambridge frames the postcard skyline both ways. Sunset turns the river gold with MIT's dome opposite. Enter from Beacon Hill via the Arthur Fiedler footbridge; dusk strolls are populated and comfortable. Cost of the whole experience: nothing.
