Why visit
St. Mary of the Mongols is the only Byzantine church in Istanbul that remained in Christian hands after the conquest and continues to serve the local Greek community. Its brick-and-stone construction and fresco remnants provide tangible links to the city’s pre-Ottoman past.
What to see
The church is usually open to respectful visitors outside service times. Modest dress is required; photography inside may be restricted. The small courtyard offers a quiet moment away from the more crowded Sultanahmet sites.

Situated in the Fener neighborhood near the Greek Patriarchate, it fits naturally into a Golden Horn walking route that also includes Balat’s colorful streets. Morning or late afternoon visits avoid the midday sun and school groups.
