Go during active hours, keep valuables discreet, and avoid turning the visit into a long wander if travelling with children. A local guide or driver can make the stop more comfortable, especially for first-time visitors.

CentralThis is the final resting place of the Father of the Nation, Muhammad Ali Jinnah. Its construction started soon after his death in 1948, and it was completed in the 1960’s. Made of white marble, this is undoubtedly the most well-known landmark of Karachi, being featured in pictures and media whenever Karachi is mentioned. The mausoleum building is surrounded by a large park which was until recently, poorly maintained. Lately, there have been impressive improvements to the park, with the addition of trees, paved paths, properly built steps, eating areas, and fountains that actually work. It offers a stark contrast to the noisy and hectic atmosphere of the city just a few hundred metres away. With a quiet and peaceful ambience, the garden itself is lucrative enough to make you stay and stroll for endless hours. Climbing the many series of steps leading to the mausoleum building can take quite a while. But once on the top platform, you can, on a clear day, see a large area of the city over the horizon. You are required to take off your shoes before you enter the mausoleum’s interior. Once inside, you will be simply awed by the sheer size of the room. In the center is the grave of the Quaid, surrounded by a metal fence to keep people at a distance. Hanging from the roof is an elegant crystal chandelier which was presented as a gift by China. The mausoleum hall is guarded at all times by alert security personnel. The ceremonial changing-of-guards at the Mazar is a display of the patriotic fervor of the armed forces, and is something which should not be missed if you visit the mausoleum.
CliftonThis palace was built by a Hindu businessman by the name of Shivratan Chandraratan Mohatta in the 1920’s. The building is constructed out of special pink stones from Jodhpur and the common yellow stones. It housed the offices of the Foreign Affairs ministry after the founding of Pakistan. It was soon given under the care of Fatima Jinnah, sister of the Quaid, but after her death it fell into neglect and disrepair. It was not until the late 1980’s that the Sindh governor took action to restore it to its former glory. The building was renovated by skilled craftsmen (and is still under constant improvement to this day), and was converted to a splendid cultural museum. It has on display artifacts, art pieces, paintings, Islamic art samples like blue ceramics, and other cultural relics. Exhibitions are also frequently held, the most notable one being the ‘Jewel in the Crown’ exhibition which portrayed Karachi as it was under the Colonial rule, and was on display for more than a year.
Civil LinesThis majestic Hall, constructed in a Gothic/Venetian style, was built in 1865 in honour of Sir Bartley Frere, Commissioner and later Viceroy of the region. During the Colonial days it used to serve as a center for the cultural elite of Karachi, holding regular socio-cultural activities.
SaddarAnother majestic building from the British era. This market was constructed on a demolished execution site. It is another fine example of British/Gothic architecture. It was built in 1890, to mark the silver jubilee of the reign of Queen Victoria. The building itself contains four identical galleries, a large central atrium, and a 140-ft high elegant clock tower (whose clock no longer functions). As a marketplace, Empress Market attracts large crowds of customers from all around the city, as everything of general everyday use, especially foodstuff, is available at quite low prices. You can see how the locals interact, haggle and buy. But the market proves just as satisfying for those interested in ancient architecture and monuments. No tickets. Feel free to roam about the vicinity, in and out, as many times as you wish.
The beach, commonly called Clifton, is a long stretch of shore. It extends from southern parts of Karachi to the northwestern Karachi coasts, where it merges with the eastern coasts of Baluchistan. The common areas of the beach ideal for recreation include: The Clifton area, also called Seaview; The Sandspit area (a long drive from the main Clifton beach, much quieter and calmer, ideal picnic spot if you can rent a hut there); Hawkesbay area (clean sandy shores and clear and cool waters; also is a natural breeding ground for the endangered Green Turtle); Paradise Point (famous for high tides and dangerous rocks which have been severely eroded by water and wind to form natural caves and arches); Gadani (just outside Karachi, inside Baluchistan; famous for its rocks and clear waters).
The most prominent of all museums in Pakistan. It contains a splendid collection of ancient objects, transcripts, and other relics from prehistoric ages to the modern history of Pakistan. The galleries are well organized and the ambience is one of care rather than neglect. A special mention are the exhibits on the Indus Valley settlements, namely the ancient Harappa, Gandhara, and the Mohen-jo-daro civilizations. Sculptures, coins, items and objects of daily use, toys, clothes, crockery and pottery, all portray the rich cultural heritage of Pakistan well before it came into being. A special section on Islam in the Subcontinent includes beautiful Islamic calligraphy samples, ancient religious manuscripts, miniature models, paintings, and the clothes and weapons of early Muslim invaders. The museum also contains an ethnological gallery which highlights the different races and religions, and the evolution and amalgamation of cultures in the Subcontinent.
TowerMerewether Clock Tower is one of Karachi's defining colonial-era landmarks, standing at the edge of the old port city near M.A. Jinnah Road and I. I. Chundrigar Road. Raised by public subscription as a memorial to Sir William L. Merewether, the former Commissioner in Sindh, it was designed by municipal engineer James Strachan, had its foundation stone laid in 1884, and opened to the public in 1892.
TowerThe Karachi Port Trust Building is one of the most recognizable heritage landmarks near Karachi's old port district, standing on Eduljee Dinshaw Road as the historic headquarters of the authority that manages the Port of Karachi. Built in 1915-16 and designed by architect George Wittet, the building reflects the confidence of Karachi's early twentieth-century port era, when the city was growing into one of the subcontinent's major maritime gateways.
Constructed along 3.7 kilometers of coast, and spread over 80 acres of land, this park is reputed to be the largest park in Asia. Needless to say, it adds considerably to the beauty of the beach. Its attractions include unique rose bushes, lush green lawns, tall trees, beautifully crafted fountains, well placed wooden and stone benches, well maintained restrooms, clean paved pathways, children’s play areas, large dinosaur statues, a turtle pond with live turtles, and food courts and souvenir shops.
Founded in 1893 and known originally as Gandhi Garden, this zoo also contains a few botanical gardens. A pretty basic amenity, but a popular hangout nevertheless. The collection of exotic birds from all over Pakistan, and also from abroad, is sure to delight. A lake serves as a natural habitat for many species of ducks, geese, and swans, and a separate section of the same lake houses alligators and crocodiles. A Reptile House (which has a separate ticket) contains exhibits with around a dozen different reptile species, including lizards, snakes, tortoises, and small crocodiles. A Natural History Museum (also with a separate ticket) houses several preserved animals, some of them believed to be extinct in Pakistan due to excessive hunting and poaching. The Mughal Garden is one of the main attractions of the zoo. It contains beautiful flower bushes and fountains. A must-visit if you want to create photographic memories. Do not worry if you have not brought along a camera. There are several professional photographers located inside the zoo who will take and develop your photographs in very little time, and at a very little cost – just make sure they do not find out you are a foreigner, in which case they could heavily overcharge you. The zoo offers horse and elephant rides for children as well as grown ups. It also has a playland/amusement park for children, with rides and games.
