Overview

Taxi

•    The black-and-yellow metered taxis form the first and most basic rung in the taxi services hierarchy. Most cars in this fleet do not have air conditioning.

•    ‘Cool cabs’ in their distinctive silver and blue colors are next in the taxi hierarchy. These air-conditioned metered cabs can be flagged down on the city roads and are easily available.

•    On top of the taxi services hierarchy are the branded Radio Cab services. Trained drivers, well maintained air conditioned cars of varying sizes fitted with GPS installed make this the preferred service by the well heeled class. First Cars, Star Taxis (White & Purple), Meru Cab (Green Silver), Mega Cab (black), Gold cabs (Yellow Red)Forsche Taxi and Priyadarshini Cabs are the keys players in this segment. •    It is imperitive for the driver of an unengaged taxi to take you to your destination regardless of time and distance. Non compliance to do so is an offence and you have every right to complain to the police (dial 100) and mention the taxi’s license number and the driver’s name. Usually such an act will result in the taxi driver complying with your request.

From the airport

Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport is about 28 kms from downtown Mumbai. The airport mainly consists of two terminals (Domestic and International) both using the same airspace and placed 4 kms apart. There is a free shuttle bus connecting them. The safest and most convenient way to go from the airport to the city is by hiring a cab. Metered cabs are available outside the arrivals. Always ensure that the meter is turned down in front of you. A better option would be to take a taxi from the pre-paid service. You will get a coupon with the registration number of the taxi. Charges will depend on the general area of your destination and include all tolls etc. No subsequent payment has to be made. Another option is to take a taxi/bus to Vile Parle station and then take a local train from there. This is more suitable in the evening as its off-peak direction then.

Buses

Mumbai has the largest organized bus transport system among major Indian cities. It is run by a government organization Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport. It has a fleet of red single and double-decker buses. There are air conditioned and low floor buses as well. BEST buses work at two levels. At the first level they act as feeders to the suburban rail stations. Many bus depots are adjacent to stations. At the second level, BEST buses connect the smaller of the suburbs to the city. Services begin at 5 am and operate till midnight. Selected routes run beyond these timings. All buses have their destination written in English at the front of the bus as well as to the left side next to the door where you get in. Buses are cheap and go everywhere. They have seats reserved for senior citizens, ladies and handicapped.
