Transportation

Buses

If your stay in Rome is hardly two to three weeks long and you are intereseted in sight seeing at a reasonable price, you don't need to buy a monthly bus pass. You can travel anywhere in Rome throughout the day just by purchasing the 'metrebus' ticket for 1Euro each. You can change as many buses as you want and you are also allowed one subway (underground railway) journey during that period, using the same ticket as there aren't any zones to limit you from traveling from one end of Rome to the other (unlike London). Tickets can be bought from all tobacco shops which have the blue signs 'Tabacheria'. Moreover, there are night buses as well which travel specfically in the evening.

Metro

The Metro is the wisest choice being most punctual form of public transportation; but always remember it can get extremely crowded during rush hours, so watch out for your belongings as pickpockets are very adept at unzipping pockets of pants and purses on crowded trains. There are two metro lines at Termini station. Line A (red line) runs northwest past the Vatican, and south. Line B (Blue Line) runs southwest past the Colosseum and northeast.

Taxi

Taxis are the most expensive way to get around Rome, but still if you want to travel by taxi, make sure to use authorized taxis only (white vehicles with a taximeter) as some private citizens dress up their cars to look like cabs. When you hire a cab, different charges will be levied depending on what services you intend to avail; starting from a fixed starting charge to additional supplements requested for luggage, including shopping bags, night-time runs and public holidays as well.

From the airport

Rome has two main international airports: Leonardo da Vinci International Airport (Rome Fiumicino, code FCO) - well organized and connected to the center of the city by public transportation.
