Dibai House

Address: 1 Masjed Ali Alley, Harunieh, Isfahan Phone: +98 311 220 9787 Fax: + 98 311 220 9786 Email: [email protected] Website: http://www.dibaihouse.com/

A superb attempt at the restoration of a crumbling  1670’s mansion, Dibai House is the result of years of hard work by an Iranian born, Spanish educated local woman by the name of Sufi. Known especially for its magnificent interior that replicates and adapts the traditional character and quality of spaces rather than introduce new, modern typologies, the Dibai House is a treat for tourists who want aesthetics, convenience, and hospitality in one large bundle. Ali Mosque, located near the hotel’s building, has a splendid 11th century minaret reminiscent of the Seljuk era. This can be seen from the hotel’s courtyard as you recline there on a lazy evening, sipping on a cup of specially prepared coffee or tea. Children under the age of 14 are not allowed inside the hotel, for the obvious reasons that they tend to run around and collide more frequently with objects, walls, and anything else that comes in their way. Reservations are especially recommended at the hotel.

Rooms: The hotel contains just ten rooms – each one different in setup and size. Special care has been taken to retain an authentic traditional look in all of the rooms rather than bombard them with modern furnishing and color schemes. Rooms might seem small to some travelers, but they are not inconvenient. Bathrooms are all isolated, situated separately from the rooms – a disadvantage, some may consider it, but others see it as an opportunity to dive into local culture. Only 2 suites provide attached baths. The per-night fee includes a decent traditional breakfast. Smoking is especially prohibited indoors.

Dining: 1.    A basement, called the shabestan, provides a large socializing cum eating area. 2.    The chaikhana, or teahouse, offers tasty pastries, cakes, sandwiches, and tea.

Abbasi Hotel

Moderate Hotels

Originally a 300 years old mehmansarai (guesthouse for travelers) built by the Safavid ruler Shah Hussein as a tribute to his mother, the building of this hotel has been magnificently restored. It has been transformed into a splendidly nostalgic hotel that echoes with legacies of palatial life that are sinking into oblivion in today’s modern, fast-paced world. The hotel is built around a courtyard plan, a typical feature of public building planning by the Safavids. It contains four arcades that surround the central courtyard (a Chahar Bagh arrangement). The garden itself blossoms with colorful varieties of local flora, and contains fountains and stone sculptures that add to an almost magical, fairytale like setting. The very delicate detailing of this courtyard space can be used to compare it to the much larger, much grander Naqsh e Jahan Square in the city center.

What to do with Children in Tow

Activity

Isfahan is not a city geared specifically towards children. The air around the city is formal, sober, and one of intellect and reverence rather than frolic and merrymaking. The lack of amusement opportunities within the city is somewhat of a downside when you are bringing along a family with toddlers. The only best place you can take children is probably one of the numerous parks around the city. An evening of family-oriented fun for kids and adults alike will keep pestering kids at bay, while offering you relief from the pressures of the city center.
