The Hippodrome served as the sporting and political heart of Byzantine Constantinople. Today the long rectangular square retains three surviving monuments that reward close inspection: the Egyptian Obelisk, the Serpent Column, and the built-up Walled Obelisk.

Its central location between the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia makes it an essential orientation point for first-time visitors. The open space allows easy movement between major sites and provides good photo angles of both mosques.
