Siyob Bazaar is the most useful first stop for Samarkand bread, dried fruit, nuts, sweets, spices and an introduction to local buying rhythms. Go earlier in the day for fuller produce displays, carry small UZS notes and ask before photographing vendors. Bargaining can be appropriate for some souvenir goods, but food prices may be stated; confirm the total and weight without turning every purchase into a contest.

Konigil's Meros paper mill gives a clearer connection between demonstration, production and purchase. The official tourism description identifies paper goods ranging from postcards and notebooks to bags and decorative items, while explaining the craft's manuscript-restoration role. Treat it as an excursion east of central Samarkand, not a shop beside Registan, and allow transport plus time for the production demonstration.

For ceramics, embroidery, textiles and carved wood, ask where the item was made and whether the seller can identify the artisan or workshop. Monument stalls are convenient but do not automatically prove local manufacture. Protect fragile ceramics in cabin luggage where airline rules permit, check customs restrictions for antiques and cultural property, and avoid buying old manuscript leaves or archaeological-looking objects without lawful provenance. Modern centres are better for pharmacies, children's supplies and fixed-price essentials.
