Koca Mustafa Pasha Mosque occupies a converted 6th-century Byzantine church in the Samatya quarter of Fatih. The conversion retains visible Byzantine elements alongside Ottoman additions, giving worshippers a tangible sense of the city's continuous religious life.
The structure features a single dome and a modest courtyard used daily by residents. Prayer space is functional rather than ornate, suiting travelers who prefer an everyday mosque over landmark sites.
Located in a residential area with good tram access, it works well as a prayer stop when visiting the nearby city walls or the Chora Church area. Women’s section is clearly marked and usually available outside peak prayer times.
Standard rules apply: remove shoes, dress modestly, and observe silence. The mosque demonstrates the practical reality of Istanbul’s many converted historic buildings still serving active worship communities.
