Küçük Ayasofya Mosque began as the Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus in the 6th century under Justinian I and was converted to a mosque in the early 16th century. Its octagonal plan and surviving Byzantine capitals make it one of the oldest continuously used religious structures in the city, offering a more personal scale than the grand imperial mosques.
The interior retains marble columns and a simple prayer hall layout with a women’s section; visitors follow the standard modest dress code and shoe removal. Prayer times dictate brief closures, and the site stays open daily outside those windows. Its location south of the Hippodrome places it within easy walking distance of the major Sultanahmet attractions.
Muslim travelers value the historic continuity and baseline prayer facilities typical of Turkish mosques. The smaller crowds compared to the Blue Mosque or Hagia Sophia allow more focused worship and easier integration into a dense historic peninsula itinerary.
