Why visit
Kariye Mosque, originally the Church of the Holy Saviour in Chora, houses one of the finest collections of Byzantine mosaics and frescoes in the world. The 14th-century artworks survived because the building was converted rather than destroyed.
What to see
The inner and outer narthexes contain scenes from the lives of Christ and the Virgin, while the parekklesion holds a powerful fresco cycle of the Last Judgment. The golden tesserae catch the light dramatically even on overcast days.
Plan your visit
The site is smaller and less crowded than Hagia Sophia. Allow 45–60 minutes. Modest dress and head covering for women are required. The mosque is an active place of worship, so avoid prayer times. A small garden café offers simple refreshments outside.

Muslim travelers will value the seamless transition between Byzantine and Ottoman heritage. The mosque lies in the Fatih district near the city walls, making it an easy add-on to a visit to the Chora neighborhood or a walk along the Theodosian walls.
