Mihrimah Sultan Mosque in Edirnekapı stands out for its single massive dome and 160-plus windows that flood the prayer hall with natural light, creating one of the brightest Ottoman mosque interiors in the city. Commissioned by Süleyman the Magnificent’s daughter and designed by Mimar Sinan in the 1560s, the complex once included a medrese, hamam and shops; today the main prayer space remains the focus for visitors.
The location next to the Edirnekapı gate of the Theodosian Walls makes it an easy add-on for travelers already exploring the land walls or heading toward Balat and Fener. The hilltop position delivers sweeping views over the Golden Horn on clear days and a calm courtyard for rest between prayers.
Women and men find standard ablution facilities and shoe storage. The mosque follows normal Istanbul practice: modest dress required, headscarf available for women, and closure to non-worshippers only during the five daily prayers. It pairs well with a walk along the walls or a visit to nearby Kariye Mosque when open.
Practical note: the single minaret and elevated site mean the call to prayer carries clearly across the neighborhood; arrive outside prayer windows for unhurried exploration. No formal on-site restaurant, but the surrounding Fatih streets offer quick kebab and pide options.
