Sher-Dor Pattern Spotting for Families gives children a purposeful way to look at Registan instead of simply crossing the square. Begin at Sher-Dor’s façade and choose one small area of decoration: a window, a border, a tiled panel or the large portal. Ask children to follow repeated shapes with their eyes and describe what changes when a pattern moves from one part of the façade to another.
The activity becomes more rewarding when families compare rather than collect facts. Notice how the portal’s decoration frames the entrance, then look across the square to see how other Registan buildings use different colours, proportions and surface rhythms. Children can pick a favourite motif, sketch it on paper or make a simple hand gesture that copies its curve. The aim is close looking, not an art-history test.
Build in a pause on the edge of the square so children can reset before moving to another madrasah or a meal. Sher-Dor works especially well early in a Registan visit because it teaches young travellers to notice details they may otherwise pass.
