Mimar Sinan Mosque serves the Turkish Islamic Cultural Center in Sunnyside, Queens. Named for the sixteenth-century Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan, the congregation adapted an urban building into a worship space whose decorative language recalls classical Turkish mosques on a neighbourhood scale.
What to expect
The prayer hall uses patterned carpet, calligraphic panels, a carved minbar and a mihrab framed with Ottoman-style ornament. These elements create a distinct interior identity without suggesting that the modest Queens structure reproduces the monumental domes and courtyards of Sinan’s imperial commissions.
Visitor guidance
Daily congregational worship, Friday prayer, Ramadan observance and Turkish community gatherings form the centre’s regular role. Current mosque directories identify the Sunnyside institution and its Turkish cultural affiliation, but event times can change and should be taken from notices posted by the congregation itself at the local prayer hall.
