Why visit
DUMBO occupies the Brooklyn waterfront between the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges, its name abbreviating Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass. Former factories and warehouses line streets of Belgian block, and their heavy masonry, loading bays and exposed infrastructure record the district's industrial past even after conversion to offices, homes and cultural spaces.
What to see
Washington Street creates the best-known axial view, compressing the Manhattan Bridge between brick façades with the Empire State Building visible through its steelwork. At the river, Main Street Park, Pebble Beach and the lawns and paths of Brooklyn Bridge Park replace the enclosed street canyon with open views across to Lower Manhattan.
