Masjid Malcolm Shabazz stands at 102 West 116th Street in Harlem. The congregation traces its institutional history to Temple No. 7, founded in 1956 and led for a formative period by Malcolm X, then known as Minister Malcolm, before his departure from the Nation of Islam.
What to expect
Under Imam Warith Deen Mohammed’s national reforms, the community moved into Sunni Islamic practice and later adopted Malcolm X’s Muslim name, El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, for the mosque. The building therefore holds both living congregational use and a central place in African-American Muslim history.
