Why visit
Powers Street Mosque occupies a small former church at 106 Powers Street in Williamsburg. Lipka Tatar immigrants from Eastern Europe purchased the building in 1931 for the American Mohammedan Society, creating the oldest surviving purpose-adapted mosque in New York City.
What to expect
The clapboard exterior, pointed windows and compact prayer room retain the scale of the nineteenth-century structure. Family histories, photographs and community objects connect the site with Tatar migration from Poland, Lithuania and Belarus and with several generations of Muslim life in Brooklyn.
Visitor guidance
This is not a drop-in mosque operating a daily public timetable. Moslem Mosque Inc., the organization that preserves it, states that the building opens by appointment and on posted holidays only; its calendar and direct email provide the valid route to current access, heritage visits and special observances.
