The Whispering Gallery is formed by the low tiled arches outside the Oyster Bar on Grand Central Terminal's lower level. Two people standing at diagonally opposite corners can face the wall and speak softly, yet hear one another across the busy passage with surprising clarity.
What to expect
The effect comes from sound waves following the curved surface of the vault, a phenomenon often described as whispering-gallery waves. The Guastavino tile construction gives the crossing its distinctive herringbone pattern and hard, continuous surface, joining an acoustic curiosity with one of the terminal's characteristic architectural techniques.
