Central Park's rowboat tradition is centered on the Boathouse beside the Lake, an ornamental body of water created as part of the park's nineteenth-century design. Small wooden boats move between Bethesda Terrace, Bow Bridge and the wooded edge of the Ramble, presenting familiar park landmarks from water level.
What to expect
The present building dates from the 1950s and replaced an earlier Victorian boathouse that had deteriorated. Its terraces, restaurant spaces and rental landing make it both an architectural feature and a working waterfront within the park. The surrounding paths connect quickly with the Mall, Conservatory Water and nearby east-side entrances.
