Why visit
Gantry Plaza State Park occupies the Queens waterfront in Long Island City opposite the United Nations and Midtown Manhattan. Its name comes from the preserved steel gantries once used to move rail freight between barges and the shore, monumental industrial frames that now anchor a recreational landscape.
What to see
Piers project into the East River beside a continuous promenade, lawns, planted gardens, seating terraces and recreation areas. The restored Pepsi-Cola script sign marks another layer of waterfront industry, while old rail tracks and transfer structures reveal how freight crossed the harbor before trucks dominated regional distribution.

The unobstructed western exposure makes the river and Manhattan skyline the park's central visual material. Ferries, tugs and tidal movement animate the foreground; the Chrysler Building, Empire State Building and dense Midtown towers rise behind it, turning former transport infrastructure into a precise frame for the city across the water.
