Why visit
Governors Island lies in New York Harbor a short ferry ride from Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn. Fort Jay and Castle Williams preserve layers of coastal defense, while brick officers' houses and institutional buildings recall the island's long use by the United States Army and Coast Guard before the base closed in 1996.

The northern historic district contrasts with newer parkland built across former infrastructure. The Hills rise from recycled demolition material and engineered fill, culminating at 70-foot Outlook Hill with views across the harbor; nearby lawns, groves, wetlands, art installations and expansive play landscapes occupy the island's southern half.
