Why visit

The current Madison Square Garden opened in 1968 between Seventh and Eighth avenues above Pennsylvania Station. It is the fourth New York venue to carry the name and the first located away from Madison Square, using a circular arena and cable-supported roof to create a large column-free interior.

What to see

The New York Knicks and New York Rangers are its principal resident teams, requiring rapid conversions between basketball court and ice rink. Boxing, college basketball, concerts, comedy, political gatherings and large public ceremonies repeatedly transform the same floor, seating and backstage systems for very different kinds of crowd.

Plan your visit

A major renovation completed in 2013 added bridges high above the arena, expanded concourses and modernized suites and technology while retaining the distinctive bowl. The building's importance comes from accumulated live events as much as form: its architecture is a machine for repeatedly changing scale, surface, sound and public attention.
