Why visit
Socrates Sculpture Park occupies five acres on the East River in Long Island City. Artist Mark di Suvero and local collaborators transformed an abandoned landfill and illegal dumping ground into an outdoor studio and exhibition space in 1986, retaining the openness needed to fabricate sculpture at architectural scale.
What to see
New commissions and group exhibitions change across the lawn, so the park has no fixed permanent collection defining a typical visit. Artists can build with cranes, welding equipment and industrial materials onsite, making fabrication, weathering and the relationship between artwork and landscape visible parts of the program.
Plan your visit
The Manhattan skyline, river, mature trees and remnants of Queens industry form an active setting rather than a neutral backdrop. Performances, films, education and community projects broaden the site's role, while free public access preserves its original fusion of working studio, neighborhood park and experimental museum without walls.
