Queens Museum stands in the New York City Building at Flushing Meadows Corona Park, constructed for the 1939–40 World's Fair. The building later housed the United Nations General Assembly from 1946 to 1950, returned to World's Fair use in 1964–65 and became the museum's home in 1972.
Its signature object is the Panorama of the City of New York, a 9,335-square-foot scale model commissioned for the 1964 fair. Thousands of miniature buildings map all five boroughs, while periodic updates record major changes and make the model both an idealized planning instrument and an evolving document of the city.
Long-term displays also draw from the two World's Fairs and the Neustadt Collection of Tiffany glass. Contemporary exhibitions, commissions, education and community programs foreground artists and residents of Queens, connecting the international ambitions of the historic site with the borough's present cultural diversity.
