Why visit
St. Patrick's Cathedral occupies an entire Fifth Avenue block opposite Rockefeller Center. Designed by James Renwick Jr., the Gothic Revival church opened in 1879 and later gained its twin spires, creating a white-marble vertical composition now surrounded by much taller commercial towers.
What to see
Inside, clustered columns carry pointed arches and ribbed vaults along the nave toward the sanctuary. Stained-glass windows, carved altars, side chapels, the great organ and the Lady Chapel build a layered devotional interior whose scale remains legible despite the constant movement of Midtown outside.

The cathedral is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York and an active place of worship, not solely a preserved landmark. Masses, prayer, music and major diocesan ceremonies continue within a building whose architectural contrast—European medieval forms against glass-and-steel Manhattan—has become part of its public identity.
