Why visit
Wave Hill occupies a high ridge in Riverdale above the Hudson River, where twenty-eight acres of gardens and woodland open toward the Palisades. The property developed from nineteenth-century country estates and was given to New York City in 1960 before reopening as a public garden and cultural center.

The Pergola frames the broad river view, while the Flower Garden, Wild Garden, Herb and Dry Gardens, aquatic beds and Marco Polo Stufano Conservatory create smaller compositions with distinct plant palettes. Their scale encourages close attention to foliage, texture and seasonal succession rather than botanical spectacle measured only by acreage.

Wave Hill House and Glyndor House preserve the estate's residential history and now support performances, education and contemporary art. The Abrons Woodland restores a rocky native landscape below the formal gardens, making the site a deliberate conversation between cultivated design, historic architecture, ecological repair and the dramatic geology across the river.
