Why go
Greenwich Village does not have one retail spine or formal shopping centre. Stores appear along Bleecker, West 8th, Christopher, Greenwich Avenue and the side streets around Washington Square, where the irregular grid and small historic buildings favour narrow, individually operated premises.
What you will find
The district is strongest in independent fashion, vintage clothing, books, records, jewellery, fragrance, gifts and specialist food. Bleecker Street mixes established labels with compact boutiques, while the eastern streets near the university carry a younger combination of footwear, music, stationery and resale shops.
Before you go
Turnover is frequent and older lists quickly become inaccurate, so the district itself is the durable subject rather than a frozen catalogue of names. Time Out’s current editorial directory documents active boutiques, while walking between them reveals townhouse façades, cafés and performance venues integral to the Village setting.
