Why take this tour
The official Rockefeller Center Tour is a seventy-five-minute walk through the landmarked Midtown campus between Fifth and Sixth avenues. Its subject is the Center as a coordinated urban project: commercial towers, plazas, passages and public art built largely during the Great Depression under John D. Rockefeller Jr.'s direction.
The experience
The route examines Art Deco façades and works integrated into the buildings, including Lee Lawrie's Wisdom above the entrance to 30 Rockefeller Plaza and Paul Manship's gilded Prometheus above the Lower Plaza. These commissions turn corridors and entrances into a deliberate visual program rather than incidental decoration.
Before you book
A guide connects the art with the complex's architecture, broadcasting history and changing public spaces, including Channel Gardens and the plaza known for its rink and Christmas tree. This is the Center's dedicated ground-level history tour; admission to the Top of the Rock observation deck is a separate experience.
