Subway, buses and public transit

Check the MTA service-status and trip-planning tools before leaving, particularly at night and on weekends when maintenance can reroute trains. Not every station is step-free, so travellers with wheelchairs, strollers or heavy luggage should plan around accessible stations and elevator status. Keep bags controlled, let passengers leave before boarding and avoid blocking doors or platforms during busy periods.

The subway runs around the clock, although individual routes and stations can change during maintenance. Staten Island is not connected to the main subway network; its railway operates within the borough and the Staten Island Ferry links St. George with Lower Manhattan. Buses fill many cross-town and neighborhood gaps where rail routes are indirect or absent.
